HODGSON MEADOW

Set within a broad Montana meadow with sweeping views of Columbia Mountain and the Whitefish Range, Hodgson Meadow reflects the homeowners' desire for simplicity, clean lines, and low-maintenance living. Inspired by traditional farm structures, the home combines steeply pitched roof forms with modern materials and detailing, creating a residence that feels both contemporary and connected to its rural surroundings.

The design consists of two symmetrical wings linked by a low covered entry pavilion. One wing serves as private guest accommodations, while the other contains the owners' primary living spaces, allowing for both comfortable daily living and gracious entertaining.

Because the home sits in a wide-open landscape, native stone terraces and retaining walls play an important role in anchoring the structure to the site. These elements create outdoor living spaces while visually grounding the home within the meadow. Large expanses of glass capture mountain views and flood the interior with natural light, while steel sunshades provide shade and reinforce the home's modern architectural character.

A disciplined use of geometry establishes a sense of order throughout the design. Horizontal window alignments, rectangular trim patterns, and right-angled details are balanced by subtle curved elements, including bowed stone planters and curved entry walls. The result is a home that feels both crisp and welcoming.

Natural materials add warmth and richness throughout the interior. Custom fir cabinetry, Brazilian cherry flooring and trim, clear cedar ceilings, natural stone, and exposed black steel create a refined yet comfortable atmosphere. Of particular note are the cedar ceilings in the entry and living room, detailed with narrow shadow grooves that create a subtle black pinstripe effect, complementing the steel elements used throughout the home.

The simple architectural forms provide an ideal backdrop for the owners' collection of antiques and vintage memorabilia, adding personality and character to the clean modern spaces. Hodgson Meadow demonstrates how thoughtful residential design can combine durability, comfort, and timeless architecture while taking full advantage of the openness, sunlight, and mountain views that define this remarkable meadow setting.

“Ross beautifully operationalized my ideas and worked hard to help me visualize his ideas. Working closely together, he made my vision into reality combining function and form into a house I love.”
