BROWN RIVER HOME

The Brown House blends timber frame and Craftsman influences, embodying strength, comfort, and a deep connection to its riverside setting. Situated on a prominent bend of the Stillwater River, the home captures panoramic views both upstream and downstream while responding thoughtfully to the site's natural contours and landscape.

The residence is organized around a simple L-shaped floor plan that is refined by a dramatic angled axis cutting through the composition. This organizing element begins at the covered front entry, tucked into the shelter of the L-shaped form, and continues through a soaring two-story foyer that serves as the heart of the home. Along this central spine, exposed timber framing defines the circulation spaces and visually connects the home's two wings. The axis then extends through the rear façade onto a spacious covered terrace positioned to frame views of a natural bend in the river.

Heavy timber construction is featured throughout the design, creating a sense of warmth and permanence. Timber trusses, beams, and columns frame the entry sequence, define the interior gathering spaces, and culminate in a large timber truss spanning the rear terrace. A massive two-sided stone fireplace anchors the open-concept living room, dining room, and kitchen, providing both physical and visual focus while reinforcing the home's connection to natural materials.

A continuous roof system wraps the exterior of the home, creating a sheltered arrival experience, generous wraparound porches, and an expansive covered outdoor living area overlooking the river. Groups of timber columns are supported by carefully proportioned stone piers that establish a hierarchy throughout the design. At the main entrance, tall stone columns create a sense of strength and arrival. As visitors move around the home, the stone elements become lower and more informal, transitioning into landscape walls and planters that soften the architecture and connect it to the surrounding site. Along the riverside terrace, the stone elements disappear entirely, removing visual barriers and allowing uninterrupted views of the water and surrounding landscape.

Custom details throughout the home—including a gracefully curved staircase, handcrafted doors, custom cabinetry, and carefully integrated lighting—reinforce the home's commitment to craftsmanship. Every element was designed to enrich daily life, creating comfortable spaces where family and friends can gather while the architecture quietly frames the beauty of the Stillwater River beyond.
