RIVER RANCH

River Ranch is a custom-designed shingle-style residence in Montana's Flathead Valley that captures the character of a historic country home while eliminating the maintenance demands often associated with traditional rural architecture. Inspired by the iconic historic chalets of nearby Glacier National Park, the home features steeply pitched gabled roofs, cascading roof forms, wide overhanging eaves, exposed timber framing, and richly textured natural materials that create a timeless architectural presence.

The homeowners envisioned a classic country retreat that would appear as though it had stood on the landscape for generations while requiring minimal upkeep. To achieve this goal, durable low-maintenance materials were carefully selected, including concrete logs, birch bark shingles, and native stone. These materials provide the warmth, texture, and weathered character of a century-old homestead while offering the durability needed for modern living. Stone extends from the exterior walls to the porches and terraces, helping anchor the home to its natural surroundings and reinforcing its authentic rural character.

The home's design celebrates comfort, simplicity, and the art of everyday living. Inspired by the homeowner's love of knitting, reading, and gathering with family, the interior is filled with cozy spaces, intimate rooms, window seats, built-in nooks, and quiet retreats that encourage relaxation. Thoughtfully scaled living areas create a sense of warmth and connection, while whimsical architectural details add personality and charm throughout the home. Every corner was designed to feel inviting, whether enjoying a book beside a window, sharing conversation around the fireplace, or watching the seasons change across the landscape.

The floor plan supports both daily living and extended family visits. A primary suite on the main floor provides convenient single-level living, while two upstairs bedrooms and a bunkroom above the garage comfortably accommodate children, grandchildren, and guests. The result is a family-focused home that balances privacy with gathering spaces, creating opportunities for memorable experiences across generations.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Flathead River corridor and the mountain landscapes that define northwest Montana, River Ranch reflects a timeless approach to residential design. The home combines the enduring architectural traditions of Glacier Park's historic lodges and chalets with modern materials, thoughtful planning, and low-maintenance construction, creating a home where quiet moments, family traditions, and everyday life feel equally at home beneath its sheltering roofs.

“Hiring Ross Anderson for my 4th building adventure was one of my best decisions and I would work with him again in a heartbeat! I did not live in the area at the time so had to rely on Ross for progress reports between visits. I sat down with Ross and discussed my thoughts, desires, ideas and vision. After clarifying a few things, he designed the home I was dreaming about, not what he thought I should want. I felt like this was a collaborative effort, not a dictatorship. His knowledge of design helped lead us to the style best suited to incorporate the building materials and feeling I was interested in. I was very curious about Everlog concrete log products and poplar birch bark shingles for a fairly maintenance free home. He brought both the log siding and the board and batten concrete to the design. His color suggestions for the exterior trim were wonderful. Ross worked with a landscape architect to determine the best site for maximum views and water mitigation. He worked seamlessly with the builder to provide the home we wanted and was ever mindful of the budget. There were no questions left unanswered and no surprises upon completion. Ross designed a home that fits our family like a hug. It is warm and inviting inside and out. We ended up with a practical, livable home that is the fulfillment of my dreams.”
