STANDING BEAR

Standing Bear Residence is a custom timber frame home designed to celebrate both place and memory. Perched on a dramatic cliffside site between Montana state land and the Flathead National Forest, the home enjoys sweeping 360-degree views of mountains, forests, and a lake while providing a warm, welcoming retreat for its owners after a lifetime of work and adventure. The design reflects the rugged character of northwest Montana while incorporating materials that tell a deeply personal story.

The home's defining feature is its remarkable collection of hand-hewn timbers reclaimed from two nineteenth-century barns on the owners' Ohio farm. Rather than allowing these historic structures to disappear, the owners carefully dismantled the barns, loaded three semi-trailers with weathered beams, siding, and reclaimed lumber, and transported them more than 2,000 miles to Montana. Those materials became the foundation of a new custom home, allowing memories of one chapter in life to become an integral part of the next.

Designing around these antique timbers was both a challenge and an opportunity. Each beam carried its own dimensions, weathering, and character, requiring the home's structure to respond to the material instead of forcing the material to fit a predetermined design. Many of the massive hand-adzed timbers remain fully structural, supporting the roof while celebrating the craftsmanship of another era. Throughout the home, reclaimed wood appears as siding, interior wall finishes, ceiling treatments, sliding barn doors, and custom architectural details, creating a consistent language of texture and authenticity.

Although the residence embraces traditional timber frame construction, the floor plan is intentionally clean and efficient. The 2,686-square-foot home includes three bedrooms and three bathrooms organized around an open great room that serves as the heart of daily living. The kitchen was carefully planned as a true working space, with an efficient layout that keeps preparation, cooking, and entertaining comfortably connected. Reclaimed oak cabinetry introduces a refined counterpoint to the rustic timbers, demonstrating how traditional materials can comfortably coexist with contemporary living.

The architecture is largely symmetrical and orthogonal, but one carefully considered gesture gives the home its unique identity. A covered entry rotated forty-five degrees welcomes visitors long before they reach the front door. Rather than approaching a flat façade, guests are gently guided into a sheltered outdoor room where the architecture wraps around them, creating a sense of arrival that feels both intimate and inviting. Passing through the foyer, the eye is immediately drawn to a large picture window in the dining room that perfectly frames the surrounding mountain landscape, establishing a strong visual connection between the home and its spectacular setting.

Natural light plays an important role throughout the residence. Expansive windows capture changing daylight from every direction while framing views of the Whitefish Mountain Range and surrounding forest. In the great room, a generous nine-foot window seat has become the owners' favorite place to read, relax, and simply enjoy the ever-changing scenery. The substantial stone fireplace anchors the living space with warmth and permanence, while exposed timber trusses overhead celebrate the honesty of the home's structure.

Outdoor living was equally important to the design. An expansive flagstone patio extends from the side of the home, providing multiple gathering areas that take full advantage of the panoramic views. The highlight is the screened porch, where heavy log trusses frame a comfortable seating area centered around a wood-burning fireplace. Protected from insects and sheltered from Montana's unpredictable weather, this space allows the owners to enjoy the outdoors from early spring through late fall, extending the home's living area well beyond its walls.

Standing Bear Residence is ultimately a story about continuity. By giving new life to the reclaimed timbers of the owners' family farm, the home preserves generations of memories while creating an entirely new place for future family traditions to unfold beneath Montana's expansive skies.

“My husband and I have been working with Ross for many years. He designed our cabin which was featured in a national magazine and we just completed our new house which he helped us design. He is very creative and great to work with! We highly recommend him!”
